I grew up with Sindy as a child, sadly my own childhood collection got given away (I never tire of reminding my mum of this fact) I used to spend hours dressing my dolls, playing with the lovely furniture and making rooms out of cardboard boxes, decorated with wrapping paper and finished off with a bit of old tatty carpet. Not forgetting making anything that appeared on Blue Peter made out of cardboard, yoghurt pots and sticky back plastic.
What's changed well for a start I don't throw the packaging away, dolls still tied into boxes remain that way, clothes don't get chucked into hot water with a generous dollop of washing up liquid, and scissors are kept firmly out of reach never going near that long silky hair.
My collection is certainly not all in mint condition, and probably never will be entire. I have spent many hours rerooting dolls, which I enjoy doing but is painstakingly time consuming, but I would rather have a doll with decent hair all be it not original.
It takes years of collecting to complete outfits, you don't have to spend a fortune just be patient and not expect to find everything at once, we all started out with nothing. I can remember having no shoes, then I didn't have a doll, then a tatty doll arrived but alas with no dress!
I'm still learning about unidentified outfits and the years that dolls were produced, and I take a great interest in all the other related items that were manufactured.
I would like to say a big thank you to my ever patient husband, who takes a great interest in my hobby and without whom I would not have 90% of my collection. He gets out of bed in the early hours every Sunday to go and rummage around other peoples junk in the hope of unearthing a long forgotten plastic doll.
